Verizon skips Super Bowl spot, plans FanFest events instead

  • Verizon is forgoing a :30 second TV spot this year in lieu of on-site events at stadiums and venues across all 30 NFL markets on Super Bowl Sunday for customers.
  • These Verizon “FanFests” will include food and drinks from locally-owned small businesses, meet and greets with local football heroes, live local music performances and interactive games.
  • In select stadiums – MetLife, SoFi, Nissan Stadium, Empower Field at Mile High Stadium – fans will be invited onto the field for some Super Bowl LIX activities such as taking a selfie from the 50-yard line, spiking a ball in the endzone and touring locker rooms.

“Advertising in the Super Bowl is an incredible opportunity to reach large-scale audiences nationally. We’ve done it in the past with an iconic spot last year, and we will continue to do so in the future,” said Leslie Berland, EVP/CMO of Verizon. “Our goal this year, however, is to create something truly ambitious — national in scope yet deeply rooted in local communities so the storytelling we’ll be doing is on the local level. We’re dedicating all of our focus and energy to delivering 30 simultaneous experiences that are not only exceptional but also tell unique, localized stories in ways we’ve never done before.”

NFL players including Tiki Barber, Emmanuel Sanders, Patrick Willis, Derrick Brooks, Jason Witten, Marshall Faulk, Jamaal Charles, Jason Taylor will be part of the Verizon events in their hometowns. Live bands including the Rams’ Mariachi band and DJs such as DJ Infared, DJ Jay Ejercito, DJ Split Second Sound will also participate in their local markets.

“Verizon powers how people live and play through our network, products, and services. Our strategy is to bring incredible experiences to our customers and show the power of our network,” explained Berland. “Engaging with customers locally is a priority for us, as is supporting small businesses and local communities. The Verizon FanFest achieves all of these goals.”

Verizon customers can register for free tickets at VerizonFanFest.com. FanFests will take place on Sunday February 9 at 4pm.We centered our customers and NFL fans to create something that is truly a once in a lifetime experience that has never been done before,” added Berland. “We’re also aiming to reach local communities and small business owners. By partnering with local chefs, entertainers, and small businesses, we’re not only celebrating the Super Bowl but also elevating the unique culture of each participating city.”
